“ANTRO“, SOLO SHOW 2024
Horacio Abdala invites us to journey through the different stages of his life, all threaded together by a central axis: sex.
His works demand restless, daring gazes in order to complete and give meaning to the game he presents in each of his pieces. Images and forms coexist within one another, merging and blending. Depending on the viewer’s perspective, a new form emerges. Playfulness is a defining mark throughout the installation. In sex, he finds pleasure and the game of rediscovering oneself. His allied codes are humor, fantasy, the idyllic, irony, and a sweet, romantic sensibility through which he constructs his universe. Pastel colors mask the shock of what he seeks to convey. The control of the line contains it, while at the same time opening up as an accomplice, guiding our gaze and suggesting how far we are allowed to see.
In ANTRO, he exhumes his shame and flirts with boldness—he becomes who he wants to be and invites us to do the same. He presents it as something dark, like a space where no one sees us, where bodies become more alike, thoughts more aligned, and the walls sweat more than the bodies themselves. In his ANTRO, chains are not broken—they are released. What truly breaks are the thoughts that block us. He gathers us to feel sexy, to enjoy feeling unapologetically slutty. Confusion, the illusion of love, unrestrained lust, the joke in between, the sadness of heartbreak, the pleasure of release, the anguish of release, bodies colliding. Struggles, a vice, an inner little monster that asks for more, that longs to be unleashed. With or without fear of excess and darkness, he embraces the imperfect and calls us to let go in this night of ANTRO.
